The intake call
M. is a teacher. Mid-thirties. Runs a classroom full of thirteen-year-olds all day and then goes home to a life that never really stops. When she filled out the intake, the "what do you want?" question got the same answer nine out of ten clients give me: "I want to lose 15 lb by summer."
Fine. But five minutes into the phone call, the real thing came out.
"I hate photos. Every single family event, I'm the one hiding in the back. My friends have wedding photos I'm not in. I want to stop feeling like I have to apologize every time a camera comes out."
That's the actual goal. The 15 lb was just the language she'd been taught to use.
The first four weeks
We started with Foundation Block. Three days a week. Squat, hinge, press, pull. No cardio prescriptions. No calorie counting until week 2 — just a protein floor of 130g per day and a step goal of 8k.
Week 1: Nervous. Textbook. Almost cancelled twice. Week 2: Slept better than she had in a year. Week 3: First real PR — hit 95 lb on trap-bar deadlift for a set of five. Sent me a text that said "OK I get it now." Week 4: Down 4 lb, waist down half an inch, sleeping through the night.
The scale wasn't the story. The story was that she started wanting to go to the gym.
The middle
We moved into Peaking Block at week 5. Weight went on the bar fast because we'd earned it in Foundation. Deadlift climbed to 145. Then 165. Then 185. Bench went from a wobbly 55 lb to a clean 95 for reps.
Around week 8 she sent me a photo — no caption. Just her in a shirt she hadn't been able to wear since her twenties. That's when I knew the real thing had already happened.
The photo that changed it
Week 10, she was at a family birthday. She sent me a screenshot the next morning — she was in the front row of the group photo. Not hiding in the back. Not tucked behind somebody's shoulder. Just — in it.
"First time in maybe seven years I didn't want to delete a photo of myself."
That message is the whole reason I do this job.
What the numbers said
- Body weight: -18 lb
- Deadlift: 45 lb → 185 lb (a 4× jump)
- Squat: 65 lb → 155 lb
- Dress size: -2
- Sleep quality: dramatically improved (her words)
- Program compliance: 100%
But if you asked her what changed, she wouldn't lead with any of those numbers. She'd tell you about the photo.
Why it worked
Three reasons, and I'm going to be blunt because it matters:
1. She showed up. Every session. No excuses. Consistent, focused, all in — same three words I built the whole brand around. 2. We coached the person, not just the body. Every week we talked about what was actually happening in her life. If a week was brutal at school, we adjusted the program down. If she was flying, we pushed. 3. I picked up the phone. Every time. That single thing — being reachable when it mattered — is the one thing I refuse to compromise on.
That's the whole formula. If you want your own version of this story, start with a phone call. No sales pitch. Just — a conversation.
And if you want to read more about how I actually program for busy people, that framework's here.
